Tror du på engler // Do you believe in angels?
Someone in my close circle asked me a few months ago whether I believe in angels.
“Yes,” I replied.
“Could we ask to see them?” the person asked.
“Yes,” I replied.
So we prayed for that.
In the months that followed, I couldn’t stop thinking about that conversation, and about how little I had to say or offer to the person who asked. Do I really believe in angels? I asked myself, when I know nothing about them and don’t live as if they were real. I had to conclude that I actually didn’t, and I decided to learn more about them—both by reading about people who have had encounters with them, by asking God to show me more about this, and by seeing what the Bible says about them.
In every area I was astonished, not least when it comes to the Bible. It is full of angels, and full of people who interact with them. There are texts I have read hundreds of times without noticing their role in the story. For example, in Acts 12, when Peter is led out of prison by an angel—which is remarkable in itself—but where speakers often skip over the fact that when the servant girl saw Peter alive outside the door, the disciples thought it was his angel. How common must angels have been—and not least, different disciples’ own angels—for that to be their first thought? And does that mean that we all have our own angel?
Or when I recently read Paul’s letter to the Hebrews for entirely different reasons, and already in chapters 1 and 2 realized that Paul actually has to explain to the congregation that Jesus is above the angels—that it is He who is the Son of God, not the angels—even though for a little while He was made “lower than the angels.” At great length Paul argues for the importance of Jesus, because angels seem to have been something the people were already very familiar with, and even direct words to the congregation had been spoken through them.
I truly don’t understand how this passed me by for so many years, but I rejoice even more in what I now get to learn and experience: that angels exist, that they are helpers and messengers, and that we can live as though they are present around us all the time.
